Shawn Colvin
press release: Known as a stunning lyricist for her clear and precise vocals, Shawn Colvin is a widely celebrated star in the folk/pop universe. Having fallen hard for music at a young age, Colvin taught herself guitar when she was just ten years old.
Moving with her family from the place of her birth in Vermillion, South Dakota to Ontario, Canada then Illinois, Colvin eventually made her way to Austin, Texas where she joined up with a Western swing band, The Dixie Diesels, until she developed nodules on her vocal chords and was forced to take a break. It was a move to New York that landed Colvin in a steady music scene with other singer/songwriters that her following began to take hold.
Colvin spent the ‘80s perfecting her sound on the folk circuit. In ‘87 she sang backup on Suzanne Vega’s “Luka” and the following year teamed up with John Leventhal who created melodies for her lyrics. Soon after, she got the attention of Columbia Records.
Awarded “Best Contemporary Folk Recording” for her first album Steady On (1989), it was the release of A Few Small Repairs (1996) that won her two Grammys for the single “Sunny Came Home” and garnered Colvin a platinum status, propelling her into the national spotlight.
Recently Colvin was involved in recording The Starlighter, a gorgeous adaptation of the children’s music book Lullabies and Night Songs available on Amazon Music along with a companion animated video. She also celebrated the twentieth anniversary of A Few Small Repairs with an expanded edition of the album.
Kendra Swanson Supports: A folk musician with strong, expressive vocals and energetic instrumentation, Kendra writes about nature, love, loss, and hope. Her soulful, homey, sincere songs are mostly written for guitar and banjo, but she is also an avid fiddler and violist.
