Artist’s Statement: Having lived in many different places - California, Oregon, St.Croix (U.S.V.I.), St. Thomas (U.S.V.I.), Nevada, and now Madison - has aided in my choices of topics. Each piece is an artistic perspective of my childhood and the life experiences I continue to gain. I was inspired to start painting in my teenage years when I observed my grandmother's sketches and heard of one of my family member's designing the St. Thomas (U.S.Virgin Islands) flag. These artistic connections have helped shape my ambitions to bond with the art communities wherever I reside.
About the Art: My abstract, elegant and whimsical pieces reflect the somewhat intense, hurried, quirky, and shuffling movement of everyday life as experienced in California, Oregon, and Nevada. The more sublime, calming, laid back feel of other works come from encounters while living in St. Croix, St. Thomas, and now Madison. In particular, the liTTle mAn Series is a compilation of stories from encounters with people I have met, befriended, worked with, and casually "people-watched" while at a stop light or during a leisurely walk with my family. I was never really great at storytelling through words. Instead I prefer to tell stories - either my own or imagined - through the use of paint or other medium. If one of my paintings or art pieces grabs an observer's eye - the story has intrigued him/her at first glance. I always like to ask the observer - "What do you see? What drew you to this piece?”
Earlier works and current pieces are acrylic on stretched canvas. As my skill set progresses, I challenge myself to expand my artistic abilities by using re-claimed materials. Re-claimed materials may consist of old plates, old coffee cups, wine bottles and cardboard, etc. With these materials as my primary medium, I have given myself countless possibilities to creatively display how I view a subject matter.
