The South Madison Farmers’ Market is located on the South side of Madison, Wisconsin and is one of the community’s greatest assets. Fresh, organic produce, flower bouquets, meat, and baked goods are just a small taste of what you might find at the market. You will also find an accessible and enjoyable community gathering place where everyone is invited to come and stay awhile!
The diverse population of the South side of Madison means diversity in the products you will see. There is something sure to please everyone’s culinary preferences. You will find many specialty products at the market that are not available at your local supermarket. We also give a fair market price for farm fresh produce so prices are also sure to please everyone.
The market provides consumers with information on organic produce, locally grown fresh produce and their benefits. Monthly events planned around produce in season, such as strawberries, corn, and tomatoes provide the opportunity to sample farm fresh Wisconsin produce, enjoy local musicians, and visit with friends and neighbors. We’re focused on nutrition, community, diversity, and friendship more than anything else and we plan to keep it that way!
The city of Madison in partnership with Sustain Dane and Neighborhood Food Solutions is happy to announce the return of our second food scraps drop-off location for this market season. Our second location will open on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at the South Madison Farmers’ Market .
Once the market location opens next week, individuals will be able to drop off certain allowable food scraps for composting at a designated booth. There is no charge to drop off food scraps.
Food scraps drop-off will be available from 2:00pm until 6:00pm during the Tuesday evening market. The appropriate scraps will be accepted every Tuesday starting on May 23, 2023 and ending on October 31, 2023.
The food scraps acceptable in this program are the same materials that would be suitable for a backyard compost bin. Coffee grounds, egg shells, raw fruits and vegetables, and other similar scraps are allowed.
The scraps we cannot accept include meat products, bones, compostable plastics, paper products, grease, cooking oil, dairy products (including cheese), and others. Additional details about what can, and cannot, be accepted at the food scraps drop-off site can be found on the Streets Division’s Food Scraps website. Staff at the food scraps drop-off tent will also be able to provide guidance about what material they can accept.
Eastside Farmer’s Market Location
There is also a food scraps drop-off location at the Eastside Farmer’s Market at 202 S. Ingersoll Street on Tuesday evenings. This location began accepting food scraps on April 25 of this year, and will be open until October 31, 2023.
Additional information about food waste prevention, food donation, and details about both food scraps recycling drop-off locations can be found at www.cityofmadison.com/FoodScraps.
