Feb. 10:Badgervoltaics™ in Action: Agrivoltaics Research Station Opening this Summer
- Josh Arnold, campus energy advisor, and other members of UW Badgervoltaics™ community of practice
Abstract:
The recent growth of solar power development on agricultural land has led to local tensions and discourse over land use in Wisconsin. One potential solution to mitigate these tensions is the concept of “agrivoltaics,” or the dual use of land for solar energy and agricultural production. In summer 2025, UW-Madison will open the first agrivoltaics research site in Wisconsin at the Kegonsa Research Campus. In this presentation, members of the Badgervoltaics community at UW-Madison will provide background on agrivoltaics and discuss the design and research goals of the Kegonsa site. Through variations in solar panel arrangement and crop/vegetation planting, as well as the use of environmental monitoring equipment, researchers will investigate the economic and environmental impacts of agrivoltaic systems to inform future design.
