Overture Center-James Watrous Gallery of the Wisconsin Academy 201 State St., Madison, Wisconsin 53703
Dick Blau
Terese Agnew, from "Writing in Stone," 2017. The quote is by Governor Lee Dreyfus, about Wisconsin's 1982 gay rights law, the nation's first.
Reception: Saturday, Sept. 23, Overture Center-James Watrous Gallery, 4-7 pm
While you may feel like Dorothy walking through the "Speaking Trees," this installation of monuments to ideas won't throw apples or pick fights. The exhibit brings to life artist Terese Agnew's belief that the wisdom of Wisconsin's ancestors offers inspiration today. Oral histories, poetry and sounds from nature play in the trees; texts, voice recordings and images present themes of women's suffrage in 1919, conservation ethics from Aldo Leopold and more. Through Nov. 5.
