"The Changing Challenges of Commercial Photography as Seen from the Vantage Point of Brynn Bruijn"
Brynn Bruijn
"An international award-winning photographer, Brynn Bruijn has spent a lifetime revealing the commonality of the human experience and erasing the differences between cultures. Throughout her career, Bruijn has traversed the cultural crossroads of the world-taking risks, ignoring logic and, in the end, photographing intimate moments of understanding. Bruijn's own logic has always been to see beyond the obvious and hopefully provide a new perspective to those viewing her photos."
- Naples Museum of Art
Photography has undergone revolutionary changes over the last several decades. New equipment and instant processing has meant not only changes in the gear we use but also how we think about photography. In particular, the rise of "amateur" photography as an important force in photography today forces us to think about the nature of photographic work. Although the opportunities for commercial photographers are narrowing, there are now more opportunities than ever for serious hobbyists to have their work exposed. Brynn will discuss these challenge and opportunities in her talk.
Brynn lived in Europe for 35 years and was a regular contributor to numerous European and American magazines including National Geographic, Town & Country, Food & Wine, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Travel & Leisure, Naples Illustrated and Florida Design. Her interior work has been featured in several books, including "The Royal Progress of William & Mary" for the BBC and the Dutch government; "Cuba, Five Hundred Years of Images," sponsored by the Bacardi family.
She represented The Netherlands in China as a guest speaker on international photography at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Brynn photographed projects for Save the Children and UNICEF. She has had a major exposition at the Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde, The Netherlands and recently in the United States, an exposition at The Naples Museum of Art exposition on "Immokalee, Images of Hope."
Brynn will present her perspectives on commercial photography this Thursday, October 15, at 7 pm, at the PhotoMidwest Studio, 303 S. Paterson St., Madison. Special thanks to Education Committee member Brad Baranowski for arranging this event.
