The Prairie Enthusiasts Field Trip
Aug. 1 (Saturday morning) Sugar River Oak Savanna
This highly diverse 9-acre oak savanna is a preserve of The Prairie Enthusiasts managed by the Empire-Sauk of TPE. It still shows a few signs of past use as a pasture, but 38 years of near annual fire has fostered a remarkable recovery. There are now 400 native plant species present. If we are lucky, Liatris pycnostachya (prairie blazingstar) and rattlesnake master will still be in bloom, giant false foxglove will be starting to open up, and many butterflies will still be in flight.
Time: 10:00 AM to Noon. Trip leader: Rich Henderson (608-845-7065).
Directions: From the intersection of Co. Hwy M and PD (north of Verona and SW of Madison) take PD west 3.0 miles to Timber Lane, turn right (north) on to Timber Lane and then immediately turn left into first driveway. Proceed to the brick house (2845 Timber Lane). Park in mowed lawn
