The annual state tribute featuring speakers and music takes place at the Capitol (and is also broadcast live on both Wisconsin Public Radio and Wisconsin Public Television). The King Coalition of Madison and Dane County celebration at Overture begins with freedom songs preceding a 6 pm program featuring a keynote by NAACP Wisconsin State Conference President Frank A. Humphrey, awards presentations and the MLK Community Choir. Events kick off with the annual free community dinner Friday, Jan. 12, from 4:30-7 pm at UW Gordon Dining Center. For more events, read on.

Kick-off the King Holiday weekend with fellowship and food at Gordon Commons, 770 W. Dayton Street in downtown Madison. Dinner served buffet style from 4:30 to 7:00 PM. There is NO COST to attend. Dinner will include fried and baked chicken, mac n' cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, sweet potatoe pie, and more. Join us and share a wonderful meal with friends, old and new, in Dr. King's spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood. Performance by Madison Music Makers.
FREE shuttle bus service provided by Kobussen Buses, Ltd with pickup at the YWCA (departing 5:45 PM) and Grace Episcopal Church (departing 5:55 PM).

ANNUAL MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. OUTSTANDING YOUNG PERSON BREAKFAST
January 14, 2018 | 8am-10am (doors open at 7:30am), Edgewood High School, 2219 Monroe St.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Recognition Breakfast is one of Wisconsin’s largest youth and family focused celebration of the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. Over 800 parents, youth, teachers, school administrators, elected offcials, and community leaders attend the event each year.
The Breakfast celebrates students’ academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and service to their community. The highlight of the Breakfast is the presentation of Outstanding Young Person Awards to nearly 200 middle and high school students of color in Dane County for their academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and service to the community.
Martin Luther King Scholarships are presented to exceptional high school seniors. The Breakfast is open to the public and is one of the oldest and most well attended family observations of the King Holiday in Wisconsin.

Northside Dr. Martin Luther King celebration and worship service: “MLK: Jesus’ Dream,” this Sunday, January 14, 2017, at 9:15am at Sherman Church (3705 N. Sherman Avenue).
Several Northside and Eastside churches are partnering to bring this celebration to the Northside. The Honorable Rev. Everett Mitchell will be the guest speaker.

From the Capitol Rotunda in Madison, Wisconsin celebrates the 38th Annual "Tribute and Ceremony" honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This is Jonathan Overby, inviting you to attend the official state ceremony honoring King in words and music, Monday, January 15 at 12 Noon. The event is free and open to all!

Frank Humphrey has given a full life of service that spans over 40 years with the NAACP and other community service and civil rights organizations. He currently serves as President of the NAACP Wisconsin State Conference. He served on the NAACP National Board for more than a decade and as a member of the NAACP Executive Committee under the leadership of the legendary civil rights icon, Julian Bond. He has served as NAACP National Board Asst. Treasurer and on numerous national NAACP Committees including Audit, Advocacy & Policy, Budget & Finance, and Legal Resolutions and Membership Committees. He served as Vice Chair of the Convention Planning Committee and was instrumental in bringing the NAACP National Convention to Milwaukee in 2005. His service has also included being designated the National Board Appointed Administrator for NAACP branches in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Las Vegas, Nevada and Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2016, he was elected as a corporate board member of the $2.6 billion U.W. Credit Union Board of Directors.
The King Coalition was established in the fall of 1985 as a community group to plan the official City of Madison and Dane County observances of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. The Coalition brings people from all walks of life together in the spirit of true brotherhood and sisterhood to commemorate the life and accomplishments of this renowned leader of the civil rights movement. King Coalition events encourage the people of Dane County to reaffirm their commitment to building a just community out of our racial, religious and economic diversity.
