The Thing with Feathers
“Hope” is the thing with feathers, as every student of Emily Dickinson knows, and the boppy indie rock of Nashville's The Thing With Feathers is nothing if not hopeful. Their straightforward guitar-driven sound harks back to the early 1990s; Nashville's country twang doesn't seem to have infiltrated the songbook, though they're touring in support of a new EP, Sundays in the South. Trust Falls opens.
$15 ($12 adv.).
media release: The ever-evolving Nashville-based band The Thing With Feathers are thrilled to share their exhilarating new single “Lights Down Low” and its accompanying music video directed by Hannah Gray Hall. Their new EP, Sundays in the South, will be available in full on February 18 via Fat Pipe Recordings/Kartel Music Group.
Speaking on the origins of the lyrics for “Lights Down Low,” the band’s founder, singer and guitarist Dave Welcsh writes that it “...tells the events of a fast and dangerous relationship that started in a smoke filled bar. [The song is about] two characters' rebellion against the whitewashed ideologies of southern Christian culture. The song is centered around a bass riff and has an overall darker tone, something we were eager to play around with after writing songs that were bright and pop-forward.”
The band previously shared the lead single from the extended play, “Static.” The ballad, an atmospheric and anthemic evolution for the band, was produced by Owen Lewis and Ben Cramer. It marked their first offering since the release of “We’ll Be Fine,” a single the band dropped back in 2021. Their new EP will be available in full on February 18th via Fat Pipe Recordings/Kartel Music Group. Pre-save Sundays in the South on your preferred streaming service.
The Thing With Feathers is an alt-rock, pop and dance enigma, fueled by 4 of Nashville’s favorite fools: Dave Welcsh (vocals and guitar), Sean Carroll (bass), Alex Hendricks (lead guitar) and Chris Roussell (drums).
Embodying the punk ethos of DIY, the Feathers bring the kind of eccentric, electric energy capable of catapulting a garage band, initially built for taking over college towns, in front of both underground and mainstream audiences alike.
The crew’s unpracticed, quirky swagger coupled with stellar musicianship has resulted in a catalog of equally introspective and uncomplicated tunes, dedicated to booty-shakers everywhere. Welcsh, the Feathers front man, stated plainly, “Our music is an invitation. It’s an empowerment, a call to something greater, a belief in something more, but most of all it is hope.”
