media release: This month, Sun Prairie Civic Theatre (SPCT) invites audiences of all ages to experience the magic, music and heart of “The Wizard of Oz.” One of the largest and most ambitious productions in the organization’s history. Running January 16 – 25 at the Sun Prairie West High School Performing Arts Center, this production features an cast of 65 performers from Sun Prairie and the greater Madison community and more than 200 costumes, making it the most costume-heavy show SPCT has produced in its collective memory.
Based on L. Frank Baum’s beloved story and featuring the iconic music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, “The Wizard of Oz” follows Dorothy Gale as she journeys through the Land of Oz. As she journeys alongside the Scarecrow, Tinman and Cowardly Lion, she discovers that courage, heart and home were always within reach.
“This is truly a community-powered production,” says SPCT Board President Mike Schuster. “With cast members spanning generations and hundreds of volunteer hours spent on costumes, sets, props, makeup and other production details, this show represents what community theatre does best. And that’s bringing people together to creatively collaborate on creating something unforgettable.”
From the colorful Munchkins and Emerald City residents to the Winged Monkeys and Winkie Guards, the scale of the cast and costumes promised to create a visually rich, entertaining experience that mirrors the wonders of the classic film while celebrating live theatre’s unique energy.
