press release: Many 19th century German and other European immigrants arrived in the Midwest via the port of New Orleans and the Mississippi River. Others stayed in the city of New Orleans. This presentation explores the long history of Germans in New Orleans, including the establishment of a German colony in the 1720s; German experiences in the 19th century within the city’s cultural scene and social and charitable organizations; and the impact of World War I on the New Orleans German community.
The presentation will also address challenges of preserving historic archival materials and barriers to making them accessible, such as their condition, obscurity, language and paleography.
