press release: "Haikee (pronounced hi-kee) is a term of my invention," reports Mulcahy. "It is at once a play on Haiku, the minimalist Japanese poetry form, and 'high key,' a photographic style characterized by a narrow tonal range predominated by tones in the brighter registers of the luminosity spectrum.
"These Haikee images are intentionally bright and simple in composition in keeping with the defining characteristics of the two root forms of expression. Just as the few syllables in a classic Haiku provide the cadence and the poet's meaning, the few dark tones in these otherwise bright compositions reveal the patterns, rhythms, and contrasts that tell their stories."
The Lowell Center is located on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus at 610 Langdon St. and operated by the University of Wisconsin-Extension Conference Centers. The lobby is set aside to showcase the creativity and talent of photographic artists throughout the Madison area and southern Wisconsin.
