Trigger Hippy
Despite the somewhat jarring band name, Trigger Hippy is a fount of good vibes and soulful grooves. Formed by bassist/songwriter Nick Govrik and former Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman, the rebuilt quartet now includes Band of Heathens guitarist/singer Ed Jurdi and singer/sax player Amber Woodhouse. On the single “Don’t Wanna Bring You Down,” the three singers trade lines like a jam band Sly & the Family Stone. With Pat Ferguson & the Sundown Sound.
$23 ($20 adv.).
press release: Rejuvenated artist collective Trigger Hippy will perform at the Majestic Theatre on November 13 in support of Full Circle & Then Some, their first album in five years releasing on October 11th via Turkey Grass Records/Thirty Tigers. Co-founded by Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman and bassist, vocalist and principal songwriter Nick Govrik, Trigger Hippy returns with guitarist and singer Ed Jurdi (Band of Heathens) and powerhouse vocalist and saxophonist Amber Woodhouse, as they write the next chapter. The unit infuses heavy doses of Southern rock and country soul with elements of funk, blues and three-part vocal harmonies. The result is both captivating and exhilarating, where each band member shines in any given moment.
Full Circle & Then Some follows the group’s 2014 self-titled debut, which American Songwriter gave four-stars calling it, “…one of this year’s finest Southern soul-rock releases.” Following the album cycle and ensuing tour, former bandmembers Joan Osborne and Jackie Greene returned to their established solo careers. Govrik and Gorman always planned to keep Trigger Hippy going, but it wasn’t until they connected with Jurdi and Woodhouse that everything clicked. The newcomers' surge of energy and creativity help the new Trigger Hippy embody the music and vision that Gorman and Govrik have chased since the band's first incarnation in 2009.
Trigger Hippy became Gorman's primary creative outlet following his turbulent years as co-founding member of the Black Crowes, which he details in his memoir Hard To Handle: The Life and Death of the Black Crowes, out Sept. 24. In addition to the book and his forthcoming album with Trigger Hippy, on September 9 the former Fox Sports Radio personality launched a nationally syndicated radio show, "Steve Gorman Rocks", on the Westwood One network.
