The Twilight Hours, Dylan Hicks
Stoughton Opera House 381 E. Main St., Stoughton, Wisconsin 53589
press release: We use the word rock loosely, as a descriptor for something that is definitely not anything but rock, but a type of rock that is thoughtful, sometimes introspective, sometimes full of rejoicing. We are grateful for the continued opportunity to rock. – The Twilight Hours
Matt Wilson and John Munson can’t get enough rock n’ roll. For nearly twenty years the Minneapolis duo has bounded along an experimental route that has given them the opportunity to play a host of musical roles. After a time with the psychedelic pop group Trip Shakespeare, which included Matt’s brother Dan Wilson and Elaine Harris, the two went their separate ways. Then John joined up with Dan to form Semisonic. As time went on Matt and John teamed up once again as folk duo The Flops. That’s when the two realized they like a little volume with their music and went back to good old rock n’ roll. Enter, The Twilight Hours: Matt Wilson (vocals, guitar), John Munson (bass guitar, vocals, ukulele), Jacque Wait (guitar), David Salmela (keyboard, vocals), and Steve Roehm (drums).
What Matt and John call rock n’ roll may surprise you. Their appreciation for volume won’t get you ear-splitting howls, but it will get you harmonies and melodies reminicent of The Beatles and tunes as playful and catchy as The Beach Boys. Their latest release Black Beauty (2016) covers a range of stylistic accomplishments grand enough to keep you listening, but with a pop bop and a bounce that is just pure fun.
Dylan Hicks supports: Dylan Hicks describes himself as a singer-songwriter, minor novelist, folk pianist, occasional essayist, and odd-jobber. His forthcoming album Ad Out was produced by John Munson of The Twilight Hours and includes “Eleven smartly written and arranged songs in lyrical modes ranging from barroom monologues to domestic realism.” The album is due to be released on October 20.
