Fri, Dec. 9, 8 PM. Beverly Taylor, conductor.
Presenting Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Johannes Brahms’s Nänie, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Mass in C. Beverly Taylor, conductor.
Bernstein’s commission to write a work in Hebrew for the Chichester Cathedral in Britain has become one of the premiere short choral/orchestral works of the 20th century, known as the Chichester Psalms. They feature a boy soprano, trumpet solo, strings and percussion in three contrasting movements.
The Brahms Nänie is one of his greatest choral-orchestral works, not often heard because of its short length. Yet the warmth of its expression and graceful long lines make it a favorite of Brahms lovers.
The Beethoven Mass in C is one of only two masses written by Beethoven and contrasts with his Missa Solemnis, a grand work written late in his career. This mass is more intimate, a bit Mozartean, yet still contains some of the fire that makes Beethoven so recognizable.
Ticketed: $15 adults, $8 students.
