Girls Rock Camp Madison is an intense, week-long day camp for aspiring young female musicians. This family-friendly fundraiser (the nonprofit’s biggest of the year) encourages you to come dressed as your favorite superhero. Entertainment comes courtesy of all-female ska band Supervillain Fire Drill, power-pop trio Gin, Chocolate & Bottle Rockets and local disco superstars VO5.
press release:
Wanted: Superheroes (Capes optional)
V05, Madison’s grooviest funk/disco/dance band, will be boogyin’ at Superhero Night, a benefit concert for Girls Rock Camp Madison, starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 2. It will be GRC’s biggest fund-raiser of the year. Tickets are $20, with all proceeds benefiting GRC, a non-profit organization that focuses on building positive self-esteem through music. GRC staff and volunteers will be wearing superhero capes; audience members can, or not (but they’ll be superheroes anyway).
“Not only will this event be a lot of fun, but it is critical for our organization,” says GRC musical director Beth Kille, a 19-time Madison Area Music Association (MAMA) award winning artist from Madison. “Due to our outreach efforts in the past year, we have more than twice the number of requests for financial aid for campers this summer. So the funds raised will help us ensure that all girls, regardless of their financial means, have the opportunity to rock!"
Other far-out bands performing that night will be Supervillian Fire Drill (a rockin’ all-female ska band), and Gin, Chocolate & Bottle Rockets (a spunky, sweet and sassy power-top trio). This family-friendly, boss event will be held at The Red Zone Madison Sports Bar, 1212 Regent St., Madison (intersection of Regent and Charter), with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
V05 has been named Isthmus’ Favorite Cover Band and plays tunes from 70’s fave bands like Abba, The Bee Gees, Ohio Players and The Jackson 5, as well as plenty of outta sight originals. The Red Zone features a full “grub pub” menu including nachos, fiesta sticks, quesadillas and buffalo wings, plus alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The event also features high-end raffle prizes.
