All that is required is a willingness to make merciless mockery of the most treasured love story in the English language. The show will be presented in the style of old-time radio, with sound effects being created before the eyes of the audience.
Written and directed by William Jannke, the show is a comedic parody of William Shakespeare’s most famous work. It tells the story of star-crossed lovers who try to find happiness in spite of many obstacles. Parts include the title characters, Romeo and Juliet, their parents, the Nurse, Paris, Romeo’s rival, the Prince, two soldiers, Roderick and Clive, a sullen waitress at Denny’s, and Brian Damage, a dealer in poisons. In addition to the story, there will also be various commercial parodies and an episode of that long-running soap opera, “Life on the Cowl Farm.” There are many roles available and people who have always wanted to break into community theater are urged to audition.
The Watertown Players were founded in 1988 to perform the annual holiday plays at the Octagon House Museum. Since 1997 the company has branched out and began to produce musicals and comedies. After being a nomadic troupe for 20 years, the Players finally settled down into their own theater space in The Market, 210 S. Water St., Watertown, in 2014. Their most recent productions include “Hello Dolly,” “Love, Sex and the IRS,” “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown,” and “A Family Reunion To Die For.” In addition, the Players have been staging original comedies done in the style of old radio that have proven to be very popular.
