A city snowstorm is a special magic and urban sounds inspire Kanopy Dance Company’s “Winter in The City,” an homage of sorts to Leonard Bernstein’s score for On the Town. Scandinavian folklore inspired the other dances on the 2021 Winter Fantasia program: “Once Upon a Winter's Eve” and the “Norse Tree of Life." Kanopy Dance is delighted to light up the Overture stage again this December, opening our season with Winter Fantasia, a cherished holiday celebration of dance. Winter Fantasia, (Dec. 2-5, 2021, Thursday-Sunday — 6 performances), features two treasured winter stories rooted in Scandinavian folklore and brought to life through the magic of dance: “Once Upon a Winter’s Eve” and “The Norse Tree of Life” (Yggdrasil). Also on the program, an uber charming performance of a Kanopy original, “Winter in The City”, inspired by Leonard Bernstein’s score from “On the Town.
Winter Fantasia’s cast of 32 +includes 16 Kanopy Dance Academy students, 10 members of Kanopy 2, our pre-professional company, as well as principals in the Kanopy Dance Company and featured guests. Lena Komar, age 17, a member of Kanopy 2, who has studied at the Academy for 14 years, and is a senior at Mount Horeb High School, will dance the role of the enchanting Snow Queen in “Once Upon a Winter’s Eve”. Kanopy Dance Academy dancers Amalia Fung-Jenkins age 13, a student at Wright Middle School, and Nila Voss, age 11, a student at Wingra School, share the role of the Little Girl in “Once Upon a Winter’s Eve”. Izzy Jordan, age 13, a student at Hamilton Middle School, appears as the Snow Princess. Katelynn Schroeder, age 12, a student at Oregon Middle School, and Hope Cullen, age 14, a student at East High, will alternate as the Magical Maiden in “The Norse Tree of Life (Yggdrasil)” All unvaccinated dancers under 12 will wear custom decorative masks while performing on stage.
Winter in the City, inspired by Leonard Bernstein’s score from “On the Town”, is a delightful twist on that iconic tale—with a starry-eyed, innocent small- town actor, dancer/dreamer at center stage-- -trying to make it in the big city wrapped up in the warm romance and the icy magic of winter. Expect nostalgia, joy and some great dance moves by Kanopy Dance Company members Miye Bishop, Katie Sovik, Alex Trofka and guest dancer, Tom Kilps, a former Texas Ballet Theater dancer.
