Another coffee option opens on East Johnson.
You might know the very narrow space on East Johnson Street directly to the left of The Caribou -- it's recently been a vintage shop and a record store, to name a few. For the last couple of weeks, it's been trying out a new identity as a coffee house.
705 Java Place -- named after its location at 705 East Johnson St. -- has been pleasantly transformed, with a peacock and peach interior, coffee art, a couple of comfy chairs, a small flat screen TV, a row of about five tables, and Wifi.
The menu consists of the full panoply of coffee drinks, from your straight cup of the day to more spiffed-up weekly specials like caramel and banana lattes. There's a small selection of baked goods including muffins and carrot cake, but the specialty isn't really a breakfast item -- velvety cheesecakes make this more of a coffee-break, study-break destination.
Open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays, it looks, for the time being, like the perfect quiet hideaway in which to get some studying done.
