New deal
Flavor of India, 14. W. Mifflin St.: The best deal for lunch is the buffet (which has recently dropped to $8). Beef dopiaza is terrific: chunks of tender, seasoned beef in a succulent preparation of tomatoes, onions and thick gravy. Karhi pakora is made by rolling balls made of chickpea flour and frying them in vegetable oil, then serving in yogurt sauce. This classic north Indian interplay between savory and sour is an excellent example of the regional style Flavor of India showcases.

End of summer treat
Monona Bait and Ice Cream, 4516 Winnequah Rd.: This mom-and-pop shop across from Schluter Beach serves Babcock ice cream. If you love caramel as much as I do, the Caramel Pretzel is your sundae. Salty pretzels + rich caramel = heaven. Ask for a metal spoon so you can really dig in. Plastic won't cut it with a sundae this serious.

Sprecher Oktoberfest gives attention to the soft yet firm Caramel and Munich malt sweetness, and it finishes with a clean aftertaste. Among the local Oktoberfests released this year, Sprecher's stacks up among the best.
