The Espresso tonic from Cafe Domestique.
Since I first discovered espresso tonics back in May, I’ve been referring to this as “Espresso Tonic Summer” and sampling them from as many coffee spots as I can. When executed well, the drink’s first sip has the rich and fruity flavor of espresso, followed by a refreshing hit of bubbly quinine. Cafe Domestique is a standard-setter in this regard. I’ve come to realize that I prefer my drink made without stirring; when the espresso is poured over the top of tonic and ice and allowed to settle on its own, the blend becomes more integrated with each sip. Domestique usually offers two espresso varieties, and my latest was made with a Honduran bean from Provecho! Coffee Co. in San Diego.
