Madison transplants The Box Social are a difficult band to label, which is nearly always a sign that interesting sounds will be filling one's head. The group sounds like a pop-punk band filtered through a stack of '70s power pop and arena rock records, with the chops of veteran musicians and just the right level of bombast.
Always energetic and entertaining, The Box Social create a warm blanket of guitar as comfortable as a childhood security blanket, but they keep enough edge in their sound that you'll want to make sure the blanket doesn't get tangled around your neck.
"Big T" cleans up a bit of the sonic griminess clinging to the band's previous EP, but still brings stadium-size guitar chording and a solo on the verge of careening right over the cliff. In a perfect world, the sound would already be blasting from your car radio.
The Box Social unleashed their new album, Get Going (released on No Karma Recordings) in a CD release party at the Annex on June 2. They will be doing exactly that during the next two months, embarking on a nationwide tour that will take them to both coasts and the southern U.S. The tour kicks off with a pair of shows in their former home base, Milwaukee, on Saturday. There's one more chance to see them in Madison before they leave, when they open for Local H at 9 p.m. tonight (Thursday, June 7) at High Noon Saloon.
