UP: Deer. Wisconsin hunters kill only about 100,000 deer -25% fewer than last year - in the opening weekend of deer season. Officials from the state Department of Natural Resources note that the deer population has declined in recent years, and some hunters were thwarted by foggy weather. Mayor Dave Cieslewicz reports that he saw far fewer deer while hunting this year and never took a shot at one.
DOWN: Elderly. A state report finds that cases of suspected elder abuse hit new highs last year, with 5,144 cases reported in Wisconsin, including 485 in Dane County. There's also been an increase in elders getting "individual at risk" restraining orders.
