UP: Emergency sirens. Dane County announces this week that it is spending $1 million to improve the county's emergency warning system. Once completed, the warning system will be able to better target communities in danger, without alarming those not in harm's way. Says County Executive Joe Parisi: "Despite difficult economic times, the county is making a significant investment in our emergency warning systems to make them more effective and accurate."
DOWN: Wisconsin. The state's Department of Workforce Development reports that Wisconsin lost an estimated 11,700 jobs in June, driving the jobless rate up to 7%. It's the highest job loss of any state in the nation. The Walker administration complains to the federal government about the accuracy of the reporting method, which is a survey of about 3.5% of each state's companies. Complaining is easier than creating jobs.
