UP: Homeless veterans. As part of a $72 million national program, the Madison Community Development Authority will receive $152,000 to help 25 homeless veterans find permanent housing. "It's a national disgrace that one out of every six men and women in our shelters once wore a uniform to serve our country," says U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan.
DOWN: UW-Madison students. A student committee votes to end the two-decade-old SAFEride service that offers free cab rides to students late at night after buses have stopped running. The $115,000 program is funded through student fees and allows students to take up to six cab rides per semester within two miles of campus. Committee chairwoman Sarah Neibart says the program may be revisited: "At this point there's no sufficient backup plan."
