UP: John Scocos. The state Department of Veterans Affairs agrees to settle lawsuits brought by its secretary, John Scocos, over his dismissal four years ago, for $325,000. Scocos was fired by the Veterans Affairs Board in 2009 but returned to the post in 2011, after Gov. Scott Walker took office and stripped the board of the power to appoint the secretary.
DOWN: Fundus Photograph Reading Center. The research center at UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health laid off all 60 employees after a $4.6 million deficit was discovered. Founded in 1972, the center oversaw research for macular degeneration and other retina diseases.
