UP: Nan Fey. The Common Council gives Fey, a member of the Madison Plan Commission, the third annual Jeffrey Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award. Says Mayor Dave Cieslewicz, "Nan Fey is widely respected across our community for her ability to lead while ensuring fair, civil discourse on contentious issues." The award gained special cachet this week when Stuart Levitan acknowledged at the Edgewater debate that he would never win it.
DOWN: Salvation Army. Donations to the group's ubiquitous red kettles are down 20% to 25% this year. "We're seeing more change than bills, and that's kind of contrary to what we've seen in the past," says the Salvation Army's Ruth Ann Schoer, adding that staff and service cuts may result.
