UP: Teri Basler. The 39-year-old associate professor of soil science at the UW-Madison is named the nation's top teacher for undergrads. She's the first UW professor to win the award in the 30 years it's been around. Former student Jill Dynowski tells the State Journal that Basler "cared more about us than furthering her own career."
DOWN: Deer hunters. On the opening weekend of deer season, five Wisconsin hunters are reported accidentally shot, in Marathon, Douglas, Door, Wood and Marquette counties. None of the men were killed, but the hunter in Wood County is in serious condition. When they weren't shooting each other, hunters managed to kill 6.3% more deer than in last year's opening weekend, a total of 106,404.
