UP: Yoshihiro Kawaoka. The renowned UW-Madison researcher announces he's able to create a version of the deadly Ebola virus that is safe to experiment on. Kawaoka had to stop his Ebola research in 2006 because the UW did not have a lab with the proper safety precautions. Kawaoka is now working with the altered virus, which could someday lead to an Ebola vaccine. The illness causes massive internal bleeding and kills at least half of its victims.
DOWN: Monona Grove High School. The family of a black student here says their son has been the target of racial harassment. A deer carcass was left on their car last week, and dead Christmas trees were piled in front of their house the week before. Monona Grove Supt. Gary Schumacher says other African American students at the school have also been taunted. Police are investigating.
