The UW-Madison announces that Chancellor Emeritus David Ward will be its interim chancellor, filling in for Biddy Martin until her permanent replacement is hired. Ward was chancellor of the Madison campus from 1993 until 2000.

A fire destroys the Capitol Hill Apartments on East Mifflin Street, leaving 27 people and the popular Underground Kitchen restaurant homeless. No one is injured.
Two state senators, Dale Schultz (R-Richland Center) and Tim Cullen (D-Janesville), propose legislation that would shift the selection of Supreme Court justices from an election to a merit-based appointment system. The senators say the legislation would reduce the influence of special interests on elections. It would presumably also reduce the number of choking incidents between justices.
Police issue a traffic citation to Debra Foster, 52, in the bus crash that killed Maureen Grant on June 22. The investigation continues.

U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Madison) says in an interview with The Capital Times that she is likely to run for U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl's seat: "I love this state, I love its people, and I really want to see Wisconsin flourish again. It would be an amazing opportunity."

Several groups advocating for women's rights ask state Supreme Court Justice David Prosser to take a leave of absence until a claim that he put fellow Justice Ann Walsh Bradley in a chokehold can be fully investigated.
The governor's waste and fraud commission releases a study showing that the state could save $266 million a year by clamping down on fraud in public assistance programs, adjusting overtime policies and being more efficient. Walker promises the findings won't be "just another government report put in a drawer." Wonder what's in that drawer.
Madison Common Council extends the city's downtown alcohol density ordinance, which seeks to reduce the number of taverns downtown, by two years.
Madison police arrest Maria Castillo-Dominguez, 22, on a tentative charge of first-degree reckless homicide after her 3-year-old son died of a head injury.

Two children, 3 and 4, are found dead in a car on Kinsman Boulevard on the city's north side. Police are treating the case as a possible double homicide and have detained a 28-year-old man as a "person of interest."
