The Madison Police Department announces it has suspended Det. Jeff McPike for 60 days without pay for two incidents earlier this year when he reported to work drunk. McPike is the son of former East High principal Milt McPike, who died in March.
Madison's Catholic Diocese files a response to a lawsuit brought by a survey firm, denying claims that Bishop Robert Morlino sought the names of priests who had criticized him after being promised confidentiality.

Dane County sheriff's deputies find 125 marijuana plants in a town of Westport home. The deputies were investigating the death of the home's owner, 27-year-old Travis Khazae. The coroner's office has not given an official cause of death for Khazae.

Candidates for the fall elections file papers with the Government Accountability Board. U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D) will face Republican challenger Peter Theron. Six Democrats are running for the seat being vacated by state Rep. Dave Travis (D-Waunakee). The nominees will face off in a Sept. 9 primary; no Republicans are entering the race. State Sen. Fred Risser (D-Madison) faces a challenge from Dennis DeNure, a perennial candidate who is running as an independent. State Rep. Sondy Pope-Roberts (D-Middleton) will square off against Republican Carl Skalitzky. In Sun Prairie, two Republicans have filed to challenge Rep. Gary Hebl (D). The rest of the Madison-area delegation are unopposed.
David Mumba, 26, a native of Zambia, is sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a 16-year-old girl while at her birthday party in Sun Prairie.
