An Australian terrier, Button, is found dead on the city's west side after it had gone missing from a fenced-in yard the night before. A veterinarian finds the dog died from a broken neck and had bites suggesting a coyote attack.

North woods residents in favor of a proposed mine file paperwork to start the recall of state Sen. Bob Jauch (D-Poplar). Jauch counters that he's trying to modernize the state's mining laws. "There have been no votes on this, so how can they say I have opposed it?"
Federal officials say they won't likely meet Wisconsin's Dec. 31 deadline for approving changes to how the state administers Medicaid. The state is seeking the changes in order to trim $554 million from the program over the next two years. Critics say the changes would push 65,000 people off BadgerCare Plus and other insurance programs.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that Verona has persuaded the state Department of Natural Resources to take over the review of its plans for a 265-acre expansion that the county's Capital Area Regional Planning Commission has twice rejected. County Executive Joe Parisi responds by again raising the possibility of disbanding the commission: "I'm seriously asking myself why we spend $820,000 a year on an organization that doesn't have any teeth."

The Eau Claire City Council and UW-Eau Claire jointly proclaim Dec. 13 "Bon Iver Day," honoring the indie-folk band headed by Justin Vernon, who grew up in the region.
The American Civil Liberties Union files a federal lawsuit against the state, claiming its new voter-ID law imposes a severe burden on the right to vote. See Judith Davidoff's report.
Authorities arrest Andrew P. Jensen Jr. for allegedly refusing to cooperate in the John Doe investigation by Milwaukee County prosecutors that has been linked to current and former aides to Gov. Scott Walker.
