As the June 5 recall election nears, Gov. Scott Walker releases job survey data, weeks ahead of schedule, that show the state gained 23,300 jobs in 2011. Although Walker brags about the numbers, the job growth rate is only half that of the rest of the country.

Karl Armstrong, one of three men convicted of the 1970 bombing of UW Sterling Hall, is arrested in Chicago after police allegedly find more than $800,000 in cash in his motor home during a traffic stop. The state Division of Criminal Investigation later searches Armstrong's trailer home in the town of Madison for evidence of marijuana trafficking. No marijuana is found in his home or vehicle.
The state Department of Workforce Development reports that Wisconsin lost 5,900 jobs in April.
Friday, 5.18
Federal authorities charge William O. Diederich, 60, for allegedly making numerous phone threats to the Democratic Party of Wisconsin in February. He allegedly threatened to shoot Democrats and blow up the party headquarters. If convicted, Diederich faces 10 years in prison.
Saturday, 5.19
A gunman fires into a crowd on the 600 block of University Avenue, wounding three people who are treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Surveillance video shows pushing and shoving in a crowd outside of Segredo and Johnny O's Sports Lounge just before the shooting.
Sunday, 5.20
A group called Citizens for Responsible Government distributes fliers listing the names and salaries of teachers in the Janesville school district and directs people to a website where they can find out whether the teachers signed the recall petition against Gov. Walker. This is what political intimidation looks like.
William "Bill" Sachse, who created the iconic Bucky Badger mascot in 1949, dies at 85. Before Sachse's creation, the UW used shy live badgers that would often try to burrow into the football field during games to hide. In 1999, Sachse told the Wisconsin State Journal, "I saw a display of paper-mache African masks and I thought: Why not a paper-mache head of a badger?"

Authorities charge Victor Benitez, 18, with four counts of homicide by intoxicated driver, for a Feb. 18 crash in Fitchburg that killed his four passengers. Benitez allegedly had alcohol, cocaine and marijuana in his system at the time of the accident.
Tuesday, 5.22
A busker playing guitar on the 100 block of King Street is robbed of his tips by a man browsing through the CDs for sale in his guitar case. But police later catch the suspect, Julian Parks, who is tentatively charged with the crime.
