Dane County Circuit Court Judge Nicholas McNamara sentences Ralph Lang, 65, to 10 years in prison for plotting to kill staff at a Madison Planned Parenthood clinic in 2011. The plot unraveled after Lang accidentally fired his gun inside a hotel room and confessed to police.
U.S. District Judge William Conley extends an injunction for four months on part of a new state law restricting abortions. The new law requires doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. The restriction, signed into law by Gov. Scott Walker on July 5, would likely force clinics in Appleton and Milwaukee to close.

Martez Malone, a 22-year-old Madison School Community Recreation Program dance instructor, is charged in court for allegedly trying to talk a 14-year-old girl into having sex with him and making her touch his genitals. He is released on bond but remains suspended without pay.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that UW Hospital is partnering with a Tennessee company to build a $20 million rehabilitation hospital near Portage Road, as part of its American Center complex. It will treat people recovering from brain injuries, strokes, spinal injuries, amputations and other disabling conditions.
The Capital Times reports that state Rep. Brett Hulsey (D-Madison) spent $1,200 in campaign donations to buy a red 1987 Volkswagen Cabriolet convertible to use in parades and campaigning.

Trek Bicycle reports that it collected a record $90,000 in donations in July for its World Bicycle Relief initiative. The money, with matching funds from Trek, will be used to buy 1,500 bikes for students, health care workers and entrepreneurs in Africa.
