Samuel Lehman, a 20-year-old intern with the Madison Police Department, allegedly gets drunk and stops three men on Frances Street, ordering them to the ground while claiming to be an undercover officer. He eventually lets the men go with a warning, but is later charged with underage drinking, impersonating an officer and disorderly conduct. Says MPD Lt. John Radovan: "It is anticipated his internship will be ending." Lehman is indeed later dismissed.
A 26-year-old man allegedly steals cigarillos from a BP gas station on Verona Road. But, in attempting his getaway, he accidentally drives into the store, knocking bricks out of the wall. Kevin Dunlop is charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, retail theft and operating after suspension.

One hundred and forty bicyclists complete the four-day, 300-mile ACT 7 Wisconsin AIDS Ride in downtown Madison, raising some $300,000, a record amount for the event. Most of the money will go to the AIDS Network in Madison.

Justin R. Stout, who was to stand trial for murder, pleads no contest to a lesser charge of second-degree reckless homicide and carrying a concealed weapon in the stabbing death of 22-year-old Juan Bernal outside the Plaza Tavern, 319 N. Henry St., last September. As part of the plea agreement, District Attorney Brian Blanchard requests that Stout get a maximum five-year sentence, followed by 10 years of supervision.
U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb dismisses a lawsuit by Stephen Bottila, who claims Madison Police violated his civil rights by prohibiting him from being in a restaurant and a park with his dog, Justice. Bottila has epilepsy and claims Justice is a service animal.

County Circuit Judge Daniel Moeser sentences 50-year-old Donald Wiessinger to the maximum eight and a half years in prison, following his ninth drunk driving conviction since 1989.
