Michael Young, 41, of Madison, is charged with two counts of reckless homicide for the hit-and-run deaths of Garciega Moreno, 52, and her granddaughter, Anais Ramirez-Fuentes, 8, in Chicago. Young allegedly was speeding when his car veered onto a sidewalk and struck the two, then ran from the scene and hid before being nabbed by police.
UW virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka publishes a study showing that the 1918 flu, blamed for 50 million deaths worldwide, likely attacked people's immune system, causing their lungs to fill with fluid. Kawaoka's research could help scientists find a treatment for bird flu, which also kills by inflaming the body's immune response.

Joshua Kay, 28, of Madison is arrested for impersonating a police officer after he allegedly tried to pull over an off-duty cop. Kay, a security guard, used red lights and motioned for the officer to pull over. He later told police he thought the driver was speeding.
The Madison Metropolitan School District predicts it will face a $10.5 million budget shortfall in next year's $330 million budget.

The family of Lance Cpl. Andrew Matus, 19, of Weyerhaeuser, learns he was shot to death in the Anbar Province of Iraq. Matus becomes the 68th soldier from Wisconsin to die in the war.

Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz unveils a new downtown safety initiative that includes video cameras and increased police patrols. The city has budgeted $100,000 for the plan, including $70,000 for police overtime.
The American Transmission Co. says a proposal to bury a controversial power line is too expensive. The company, which wants to build a new power line in Dane County, had identified a possible route alongside the Beltline. But it says burying a 15-mile stretch of power line between Stoughton Road and Middleton could cost up to $225 million and more than double the overall price.

A 56-year-old Cottage Grove woman driving the wrong way down I-94 crashes into another car, killing herself and the other car's driver, a 24-year-old Lake Mills woman. Police withhold names pending notification of relatives.
