The sale of the building that housed the Mifflin Street Co-op since 1969, which shut its doors last year, is finalized. ABC for Health, a nonprofit public interest law firm, will take over the site. The law firm will be the first non-grocery business to occupy 32 N. Bassett St. since the building was constructed in 1902.
Judge Daniel Moeser rules that prosecutors can present evidence of Ralph Armstrong's prior rape convictions when he is retried for a 1980 Madison murder later this year. This was not allowed at Armstrong's first trial; the state Supreme Court ordered a new trial based on DNA evidence.

Brett Hay is sentenced to 10 years in prison for violating his probation by driving drunk in November. Hay, 26, had been sentenced to 15 years' probation and a year in Dane County jail for the 2003 drunk-driving crash that killed Jesse Kessenich, 21, and injured Michael Liegman, 21.

Madison activist Jeff Erlanger, 36, dies. A quadriplegic since infancy, Erlanger served on the city's Commission on People with Disabilities and the Economic Development Commission. He had been in a coma for several weeks after choking on some food.

William Connell, 43, is sentenced to 15 years in prison for setting the fire that destroyed St. Raphael Cathedral in 2005. Connell, who has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, has apologized for his crime.
A private contractor doing sewer work accidentally breaks a water main on the near east side, leaving much of downtown without water for the afternoon.
Andre Tankson, 36, is sentenced to 47 years in prison for the kidnap, battery and rape of a 24-year-old woman in downtown Madison last year. Tankson admitted he attacked the woman after luring her to his car with the promise of drugs.

All four Madison public high schools and Black Hawk Middle School are on the list of 95 schools statewide that have failed to make adequate yearly progress under the federal No Child Left Behind law. The schools did not meet reading proficiency standards.
Two La Follette High School students are taken to the hospital to treat wounds - a broken nose and pen stab wound - resulting from a fight. A short time later, police break up another brawl near the school. School officials blame short tempers on a longing for the freedom of summer. Madison public schools get out on June 15, nearly a week after other area schools.
Snowplows and fire hoses are dispatched to the westbound Beltline near Todd Drive to clean up a large spill of onions - the vegetable, not the satirical newspaper.

Dane County Clean Air Coalition, responding to a DNR air-quality watch, announces the first Clean Air Action Day of 2007; there were none in 2006. Citizens and businesses are encouraged to reduce emissions and conserve energy use, and people with respiratory problems are encouraged to stay indoors. Metro Transit offers free bus rides to reduce vehicular emissions.
