Rock County Circuit Judge Richard Werner sentences 30-year-old Nathan Middleton to 28-1/2 years in prison for burning the corpse of Aprina Paul, an 18-year-old Fitchburg woman he met through Craigslist, in his backyard last October. Middleton claims he had consensual sex with Paul but woke up to find her dead a few hours later. The cause of Paul's death could not be determined because Middleton destroyed the corpse.
A jury finds 18-year-old Dominic D. Cizauskas, a former football recruit to the UW-Madison, guilty of third-degree sexual assault for raping a woman in her dorm room during a visit to the school last December. He faces up to five years in prison and five years of extended supervision.

Sierra Nevada Corp. announces it is buying Madison's Orbital Technologies Corp., or ORBITEC, which makes a variety of products for use in space.
Frank Productions and Stone House Development announce plans for a mixed-use project that will include a 2,000-seat music venue on East Washington Avenue. See Joe Tarr's article on page 16.

Phillip Pardee, 24, allegedly kills a goat in front of coworkers outside of Madison-Kipp's Sun Prairie shop because he did not have a place to keep it while at work.
Prosecutors in Milwaukee County file charges against 50-year-old Robert D. Monroe, a Republican, who they say cast more than a dozen illegal votes in four elections.

A committee selects three possible locations for a Madison food market: 1702 S. Park St.; the intersection of East Washington Avenue and First Street; and a site near North Sherman Avenue and Northport Drive. Project for Public Spaces will now study the three locations and make a recommendation.
Paul M. Engel, 57, allegedly robs a Mount Horeb pharmacy and later eats spilled pills off the sidewalk while struggling with police.

State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen charges George W. Bennett, 55, for allegedly harassing and threatening Dane County District Court Judge Rhonda Lanford, who ruled against him in a small claims decision earlier in the month. Bennett reportedly left voicemails for Lanford saying: "I'm not God, so if something happens, if God strikes your child dead or something, don't come knocking on my door because I'm not God."
