Centro Hispano's board of directors reinstates Peter MuÃoz as the agency's executive director. He stepped down from the position during his unsuccessful run for Madison mayor. MuÃoz lost the primary last week to Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and Ray Allen.
Six antiwar protesters are found guilty of obstructing traffic and sentenced to 11 hours of community service for lying down in the street in front of Sen. Herb Kohl's Madison office in November. The women say they were protesting Kohl's lukewarm opposition to the war in Iraq.
Andre Tankson, 36, is convicted of raping a woman in a downtown alley last August. He faces up to 120 years in prison.
A federal appeals court says the UW-Madison did not violate Paul Barrows' constitutional rights when it placed the former administrator on leave in 2004. Barrows had sued the university, saying he was falsely accused of sexual harassment and forced to take leave. He later resigned. Barrows has another lawsuit pending against UW's former dean of students, Luoluo Hong.

After a 10-hour standoff, police arrest Anthony Chancy, 36, at an apartment building in the town of Madison. Chancy is a suspect in a string of gas station and convenience store robberies on Valentine's Day.

McFarland's Village Board votes 5-2 to spend $935,000 on a 19-acre apple orchard overlooking Lower Mud Lake (see Watchdog, 9/29/06). The orchard will become a park.
The Madison school board votes 4-2 against creating a new charter school for elementary students. Studio School (see 'Chartering Change,' 10/10/06) and 'Chafing at Charters,' 1/26/07) would have focused on fine arts and technology, but some board members objected to the potential cost.

Madison Police Chief Noble Wray unveils new guidelines for interviewing crime victims, one that specifically affirms the ability of police to lie to them under certain circumstances (see story, page 8).
A broken water main causes a large sinkhole at the intersection of State and Lake streets.

Douglas McCune, 44, is sentenced to 10 years in prison for crashing into three squad cars and repeatedly ramming his car into a Cross Plains house where his ex-girlfriend was staying.
