The state Department of Public Instruction announces that Madison's Lighthouse Christian School is one of 64 schools that has been added to the state's voucher program. Western Christian School in Middleton did not make the cut.
The Dane County Board introduces a resolution to adopt an employee handbook, in preparation for Jan. 1, 2016, when its current union contracts expire.

Forest Shomberg, who spent six years in prison for a sexual assault he didn't commit, is found dead in a parked car on Winnebago Street. Shomberg was convicted of grabbing a woman on State Street and violently groping her in 2002, but was exonerated in 2009 with DNA evidence. The cause of death has not been released, but police say foul play is not suspected.

Madison Police officers shoot and kill 59-year-old Charles Carll while responding to a domestic dispute in the 5200 block of Hammersley Road on the west side. The call indicated Carll had stabbed his wife, but she was later found to be uninjured. The three officers involved in the shooting are placed on administrative leave. Carll is the third person killed by police in nine months.
Andrea Mannis, 50, dies from injuries she sustained Aug. 8 when she was struck by a car at East Washington Avenue and Hancock Street.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that the class of 2013 high school students in both Madison and Wisconsin scored higher on the ACT college admissions test than students nationally. Madison students had an average score of 24, 3.1 points above the national average. The state average was 22.1 points.
