Republicans in the state Assembly nix a bill that would have allowed retired and off-duty police officers to carry guns in schools after Rep. Joel Kleefisch (R-Oconomowoc) adds an amendment that would let anyone with a concealed carry permit bring in a weapon. Says Kleefisch: "We're going to pull the bill back and continue the discussion about what we can do in the future to make sure that our schools and our children are not sitting ducks for those who care to do harm to them."

Police in Rock County find the charred remains of a human body in a fire pit in Potter. Police later report they suspect the victim is Aprina Paul, 18, who disappeared a week earlier from Fitchburg after answering a Craigslist ad. Nathan C. Middleton, 29, has allegedly admitted to being with Paul when she died and burning her body, but has denied killing her.
Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne rules that three Madison police officers were justified in shooting to death Charles Carll, a 59-year-old who approached them armed with a knife on Aug. 17 on the city's southwest side. Writes Ozanne: "Responding to that threat with deadly force is permitted under the law."

Reynaldo Hudson, 61, allegedly steals a 32-inch TV from Radio Shack on University Avenue and then uses a bus as his getaway vehicle. After contacting Madison Metro, police apprehend Hudson near the Capitol Square with the TV.
The state's 4th District Court of Appeals denies a stay of a contempt ruling that Dane County District Judge Juan Colas issued against the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission. Colas had ruled that the WERC defied his order to cease preparing for recertification elections of school and municipal unions. The appeals court continues to consider WERC's appeal of the Colas ruling.
A federal trial over Wisconsin's 2011 voter ID law begins in Milwaukee. Two civil rights groups are challenging the law's photo requirement, which has yet to go into effect because of numerous lawsuits. It would require citizens to show approved photo IDs before being allowed to vote.
