The Madison Catholic Diocese says it's deemed "credible" an allegation of child sex abuse against the Rev. Joseph Gibbs Clauder. The case has been referred to the Vatican; it's unclear whether police will be provided with the facts. Clauder has been on leave since 1999, following an allegation of sexual misconduct involving an adult.
Eight of 15 bars in eastern and southwestern Dane County are caught selling alcohol to an 18-year-old in a Sheriff's Office sting, after the bars were warned of possible compliance checks.

Bail is set at $2 million for Edward W. Edwards, suspected of killing two teenagers 29 years ago in Jefferson County. Edwards, implicated by crime-scene DNA, was extradited from his old Kentucky home.

The feds cough up $600,000 to cover a shortfall in housing aid that otherwise would have spiked rents in the city of Madison's Section 8 housing program.
Roynell Fuller, 20, gets eight years of probation with just a year in jail for killing a man last December with a single punch. Judge Stuart Schwartz, in accepting the plea deal, notes Fuller's deep remorse and lack of criminal history.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett ends up in the hospital with missing teeth, a gash on his face and a broken hand after intervening in a domestic dispute at the Wisconsin State Fair. His drunken 20-year-old assailant is subsequently arrested.

An Associated Press review finds that one in five aides in the state Assembly are paid higher salaries than their positions call for, in 13 cases by more than $10,000. A longstanding practice lets Assembly staffers keep higher salaries after switching to lower-paying jobs.

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle confirms that he'll not seek reelection in 2010, saying, "I believe a governor should limit him or herself to two terms" - a conviction he apparently lacked while amassing $2 million in fresh campaign contributions.

The Dane County District Attorney's Office files notice (PDF) that it will not appeal a judge's order overturning the conviction of Ralph Armstrong for a 1980 murder, on grounds that the prosecution wrongfully withheld information. The office says any errors it made "were the product of innocent mistake or oversight."
