Juan Bernal, 22, is stabbed outside the Plaza Tavern downtown. He dies later at the hospital. Justin Stout, 31, of Tennessee, is arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide. His friend, Travis Knapp, 34, of Madison, is charged as an accomplice for throwing the knife away. Police say the men fought over music on the bar's jukebox. Bernal's death is Madison's sixth homicide this year.
Brittany Zimmermann's family offers a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of her killer. The 21-year-old UW student was murdered in her home on West Doty Street in April.
Dane County's 911 board rejects a budget proposal by Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk to spend $163,000 on new police dispatch software. The board says the money should be used to replace the 911 Center's outdated computer system instead.

Joe Norwick, head of the embattled 911 Center, resigns. County Executive Kathleen Falk names Emergency Management Director Kathy Krusiec interim director. The county will conduct a nationwide search for Norwick's replacement.
Gov. Jim Doyle names Richard Leinenkugel, 50, head of the Commerce Department. Leinenkugel was a marketing executive for his family's brewing company. He replaces Jack Fisher, who resigned in July after reports surfaced of his lavish spending overseas.
Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader speaks to a crowd of several hundred at the Orpheum Theatre. Nader decries the influence of corporations on government.

An early morning fire causes $500,000 in damage to a two-story apartment building on Pike Drive on Madison's south side. No one is injured, but 16 residents are displaced. Fire officials say the blaze was caused when someone fell asleep on a sofa with a lit cigarette.

Madison West and Memorial high schools each has 26 students named as semi-finalists for the National Merit Scholarships. No other high schools in Wisconsin had that many students qualify.
