In last week’s Isthmus, Nathan Comp took a look at how the Madison Police Department uses its military unit, SWAT, which stands for Special Weapons and Tactics. While some uses of the team are beyond reproach, Comp found that like other police departments around the country, Madison has used its SWAT to execute the controversial “no-knock” warrants. In these raids, officers working in paramilitary style units enter a residence without first announcing their presence.
