The centerpiece of Mayor Dave Cieslewicz's week is his swearing in at Tuesday's special noon Common Council Meeting. He, along with several alders, will likely protest the recent state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage by adding a statement of opposition to the ban. The Council approved giving officials the option of adding a protest statement to their oaths in January by a 13-4 vote.
The Wisconsin State Journal editorial board invoked a not-quite-pithy quote from outgoing Ald. Cindy Thomas in calling on the mayor to stick to the original oath, in which officials swear to uphold the state and federal constitutions, and leave it at that. Thomas said, "You can't weasel your way out of your oath."
The final paragraph of the editorial reads, "The State Journal editorial board intends to continue to speak up for equal treatment of gay couples, and we urge you and other public officials to do the same." But a quick search of the State Journal online archives for the term "gay couples" reveals only one instance of the editorial board speaking up: a single endorsement of a 'No' vote on the amendment before last November's referendum.
