File this one under the category of "Who are some of these people who show up on the mayor's schedule?" On Tuesday afternoon, Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz will sit down with Hamk Gempeler, Bill Otto and Dave Merritt, along with Mark Olinger and Mario Mendoza who work for the city.
A little Googling reveals that Gempeler is a partner at Foley & Lardner, a former city attorney and specializes in land use, zoning and redevelopment. Meanwhile, Otto and Merritt work for Marcus Hotels, which owns and operates the Hilton that's attached to Monona Terrace.
This meeting comes just two months after the mayor told the Chamber of Commerce that the surface parking lot behind the Madison Municipal building (corner of Pinckney and Doty) would make for a good hotel site. Ironically, that idea was first advanced by local developer Randy Alexander, who had a bid in for the Monona Terrace hotel but lost out to Marcus.
Also in local hotel news, Joseph Freed & Associates, the development firm behind the refurbished Hilldale Mall, will appear before the city's Plan Commission Monday night with plans for a six story hotel at Hilldale.
