In a continuing effort to de-mystify city government and attempt to make sense of the non-sensical, I give you the meaning of a long acronym appearing in this week's schedule: AASPIRE stands for Affirmative Action Student Professionals in Residence. This program places college students with city agencies in an attempt to provide mentorship and exposure to careers in public administration. Mayor Dave Cieslewicz meets with the 2007 AASPIRE interns Monday morning.
24 hours later, Cieslewicz sits down with three Progressive Dane alders (Marsha Rummel, Brenda Konkel and Satya Rhodes-Conway), Susan Schmitz of Downtown Madison Inc., John Schlaefer of Common Wealth Development, Patrick McDonnell of the Downtown Coordinating Committee, city planning chief Mark Olinger and Rebecca Cnare of the mayor's staff.
That meeting might provide more insight into what's involved with a career in public administration than anything those AASPIRE interns observe all summer.
