Mayor Dave Cieslewicz is certainly getting his Sundance 608 on this week. He was at the Chazen Museum fundraiser at Madison's newest -- and certainly most politically progressive -- cineplex last night, he'll be there tonight for the River Alliance's benefit and tomorrow for Outreach's. Certainly all are worthy of attention, but one wonders how much popcorn one can eat in a week.
Tickets to all three benefits reportedly sold swiftly, thanks in no small part to the excitement surrounding Sundane 608's opening. The new theater is a wonderfully designed space that closely follows Sundance founder Robert Redford's vision for an ideal film space that relies on local re-claimed materials in its construction, not to mention artwork and furniture from local artists and artisans. It's Sundance's first attempt at a cineplex and Redford reportedly hand picked Madison due primarily to its reputation as a progressive college town.
While right-wing radio ranters often insist that Madison's progressive tradition drives businesses out of the community, here is a pretty clear example of how that tradition has specifically attracted one.
