Word of Mouth: May 7

From your friends at Isthmus, Madison's alt-weekly.

What we're watching

Olivia Doucas, Isthmus advertising assistant:

HBO's Insecure. It's been a while since I watched a show that actually made me LOL. I fell in love with the main character, Issa, a young woman living her best life in Los Angeles. Put it at the top of your queue.

How we're moving

Victoria Boucher, campaign director at Community Shares of Wisconsin:

Slightly faster and with a bit more ease. I've been using the Couch to 5K app to transition into running again as I prepare for the Run Madtown Twilight 5K over Memorial Day weekend. Slowly but surely I'm building up some endurance and feeling lighter with each step as the app guides me through running for 30 minutes straight by May 25.

Who we're following

Jeri Casper, Isthmus web analyst/advertising assistant:

I am loving the Facebook Group Weird Second Hand Finds. Submissions come from all over the world and range from disturbing to hilarious. Recent standouts include a painting of Audrey Hepburn being attacked by a cat, pajamas with drawings of people shopping at Costco on them, Alf memorabilia and lots of "vomit clocks."

Where we're shopping for mom

What we're eating

Abby Bartlett, vice president of marketing at Wisconsin Distributors:

In an effort to try different cooking techniques, we're putting the Instant Pot away and pulling out the Dutch oven. I've bookmarked Serious Eats to understand this heat-retaining kitchen essential. Once I know how it can best serve me I'll be reading up on every comfort food article and recipe. Well let's be honest, I'm mostly excited for the Nashville hot chicken and creamy polenta that's on this week's menu.

What we're reading

Cat Capellaro, Isthmus arts & culture editor:

Our book club just finished Everything You Wanted to Know about Indians But Were Afraid to Ask by Anton Treuer. This accessible volume addresses many questions from clueless to profound that the author, an Ojibwe scholar, has encountered at lectures and book tours. He gives a rundown on issues of sovereignty and native history, from the real story of Columbus and Thanksgiving to sports mascots. I've lived most of my life in Wisconsin and felt sad about how little contact I'd had with Wisconsin's tribal cultures.

What we're listening to

Darren Bush, owner of Rutabaga Paddlesports:

I'm sort of obsessed with Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History podcast. So much of what we think we know from history is just plain wrong, and Gladwell's research and fact-checking is without parallel. I'm also listening to an Audioboom podcast called Mission to Zyxx. It a space/science fiction/ parody comedy, and it's all improv, so they go in crazy directions. Laugh out loud funny.
