Word of Mouth: May 14

Where we're shopping

Sarah Knab, communications manager for Overture Center for the Arts:

It's so nice to get outside this time of year and support local farms and businesses at the charming Westside Community Market! This is my outdoor market of choice as it's close to home and has everything I want throughout the season, including produce, baked goods and, of course, cheese!

What we're eating

Chelsey Dequaine, Isthmus social media director:

On Sunday, in an effort to go somewhere we don't usually go for breakfast, we ended up at Batch Bakehouse. OMG I'm so glad we did. They serve Kin-Kin Coffee, which pairs well with the Batch cinnamon roll. Honestly, this might be my favorite cinnamon roll in town, and the frosting on top was my favorite part. Batch's cute outdoor seating helped make for a perfect Madison morning.

What we're reading

Araceli Esparza, membership coordinator at Community Shares of Wisconsin:

As a resident of the house on my block with a Free Little Library, I don't have to go far to find a good read. I recently took Monkey Mind by Daniel Smith for a read. I know we live in a world of anxiety, but we dismiss the legitimacy of this condition. Smith leads us through his life challenges and obsessions with a genuineness that I appreciated.

How we're kicking off the summer

REAP's Burgers & Brew on June 1

Kick off summer with local burger and beer pairings, live music, and more! Join REAP Food Group at Capital Brewery for the 12th year of Burgers & Brew. Dane County's most popular chefs are teaming up with Wisconsin's talented brewers and farmers to serve unique, locally sourced burgers and Wisconsin craft brews. See the full list of participating restaurants and breweries, as well as other vendors here.

Who we're following

Drew Hartberg, Isthmus videographer:

Instagram's @imbrandonfarris is able to make everything from everyday tasks, such as cooking and baking, to more bizarre feats, such as eating a tarantula, entertaining. I highly recommend his channel if you need regular gut-busting laughs on your feed.

Where we're volunteering

Abby Bartlett, vice president of marketing at Wisconsin Distributors:

Garding Against Cancer, UW-Madison men's basketball coach Greg Gard's charity, supports cancer research and enhances patient care around the state. With Garding's mission in mind, I've had the privilege of joining a passionate group of people all willing to donate time to this great cause. The third signature event concluded on May 4 with over $800,000 raised! That's no small feat and we look forward to one day realizing all of our efforts helped find a cure.

What we're listening to

Hillary Gunn, marketing coordinator at Majestic Theatre:

I discovered Black Belt Eagle Scout on my Discover Weekly playlist curated by Spotify and haven’t been able to stop listening since. As an avid music lover and alt-rock/indie fan, this band checks off all of my sometimes-hard-to-meet expectations. How often do you get to fall in love with a band and immediately see them live afterwards? Not very. SO afterwards, when I stumbled upon their Facebook event page for their show at Communication, I was thrilled.
